What is the Holy Ghost?

The Baptism of the Holy Ghost

Matt 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water
unto repentance: but he that cometh after
me  is mightier than I,  whose  shoes I am
not  worthy to bear:  he shall baptize you
with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: (KJV)
-John the Baptist

What is the Holy Ghost?

The Holy Ghost is the Spirit of God:
Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit. (NKJV)
The Holy Ghost is the Promised Comforter:

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you…. 15:26  But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: (KJV)
The Holy Ghost is Power:

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (KJV)

The Holy Ghost saves us:
2 Thessalonians 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: (KJV)

From this introduction we see that the Holy Ghost is Power, the Holy Ghost is a Helper (or Comforter), the Holy Ghost is salvation and it is given to us in JESUS’ NAME.

God wants to give you the Holy Ghost. It is a promise.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. (KJV)

Titus 3:4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, (NKJV)

Biblical Examples of the Baptism of the Holy Ghost

Indisputably, without a doubt the bible is explicit when it goes into the details of describing the accounts of people receiving the Holy Ghost. They always spoke with tongues.

Acts 2:1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (NKJV)

The following account is very explicit when it refers to the apostles recognizing that Cornelius and his whole house were baptized with the Holy Ghost. Peter was familiar with this experience because it happened to him along with the rest of the 120 on the Day of Pentecost. There was the same sign given to Cornelius the Italian gentile as there was with Peter the Jew.

Acts 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

Then Peter answered, 47 "Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days. (NKJV)

When a person is hungry for God and someone tries to steer them in the right direction there is no argument when there is faith. When someone hears what the bible has to say about something they have never been taught, they will obey if they have faith in the bible as God's word.

A similar situation happened to Paul in Acts chapter 19 while he was at Ephesus. He encountered some disciples who had only received the baptism of John unto repentance. This was a good step of faith, but it was not the fullness of the truth. The fullness of truth was that they had to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of their sins.

Acts 19:1 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"
So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit."
3 And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?"
So they said, "Into John's baptism."
4 Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus."
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. 7 Now the men were about twelve in all. (NKJV)

Because they were eager for God, they gladly received the word and displayed obedient faith  in being baptized.

God justified them by their faith and gave them the Holy Ghost. God only gives the Holy Ghost to those who are obedient to the Gospel.
Act 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

How do I receive the Holy Ghost?

We must repent. God knows our hearts
Acts 15:8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; (KJV)

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, REPENT, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.(KJV)

We must Believe.
John 7:37 On the final and climactic day of the Feast, Jesus took his stand. He cried out, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Rivers of living water will brim and spill out of the depths of anyone who believes in me this way, just as the Scripture says." 39 (He said this in regard to the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were about to receive. (The Message Bible)

We must Seek Him
Luke 11:9 So I tell you to ask and you will receive, search and you will find, knock and the door will be opened for you.  10 Everyone who asks will receive, everyone who searches will find, and the door will be opened for everyone who knocks.  11 Which one of you fathers would give your hungry child a snake if the child asked for a fish?  12 Which one of you would give your child a scorpion if the child asked for an egg?  13 As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give the Holy Spirit to anyone who asks. (CEV)
