Self Promotion

Proverbs 26:12 Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes?
      There is more hope for a fool than for him.

Prov 27:2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth;
A stranger, and not your own lips.

Proverbs 25:27 It is not good to eat much honey,
      nor is it glorious to seek one’s own glory.

Jesus said that our love should have priorities. We should love God first, then others as ourselves. This is a 3 tiered viewpoint that is Divinely inspired. Loving ourselves should be something that is natural. However, when we go overboard with loving ourselves to the point of self-promotion, we have gone too far.

It is fine to have a healthy viewpoint of yourself, especially in light of God’s word and our ultimate identity with Him. However, if we are going to boast (in the words of Paul) let our boasting be in God (1 Corinthians 1:31; 2 Corinthians 10:17).

God spoke through Jeremiah these very powerful words:
Jeremiah 9:23 Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD.”
The need for self-promotion can be a sign of insecurity. There may be an internal and constant need for self-validation; a need to feel that you are better than others. Not only should we not engage in self-promotion, but we should also “count others as more significant than yourselves (Philippians 2:3)” and “Outdo one another in showing honor. (Romans 12:10)” If we spend more time counting others as significant, it will be easy for us to have a proper understanding of ourselves.

Here are more references from scripture that are in line with this very basic character issue:
Romans 12:3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

2 Corinthians 10:12 Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.

2 Corinthians 10:18 For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.

I was recently reminiscing about a message I heard preached long ago: "Recommended by God".

I want to be recommended by God. i.e., "Hast thou considered my servant Job?"
