Hidden Beneath the Surface

Proverbs 21:29 A wicked man displays a bold face, But as for the upright, he makes his way sure.

Proverbs 26:24 Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart; 25 when he speaks graciously, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart; 26 though his hatred be covered with deception, his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.

Proverbs 20:5 The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Proverbs 28:11 The rich man is wise in his own eyes, but the poor who has understanding sees through him.

As the old saying goes “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” People usually quote this implying that a person with a meager exterior can actually be way more than what they appear. If it is true in that case, unfortunately it can be true in the opposite case. If someone is pristine on the outside, they may be just “so, so” on the inside. Of course, this is referring to the caliber of a person. However, the same can go for the quality, integrity and motive of a person.

The bible says, “A wicked man” (perhaps to intimidate people around him) “displays a bold face.” It is, however, a “display.” The upright don’t need to fix the exterior. His way is made sure by his own character and not a façade.

Unfortunately, everyone is not going to be a friend to us. This is when we rely on the very important working of the Holy Spirit known as “discernment.” With the help of the Holy Spirit, we are able to tell how genuine people are. Sometimes it feels like a gut feeling. Other times it is a very strong impression that this person is not good for me. People with bad intentions do indeed cover up their hearts with their sayings. You can’t always go by what people say, but you must watch what they do. How they act or speak about a person when they are not around could be an indication of how they are when you are not around.

“The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water….” Deep water is referring to an underground spring. It is difficult to get an underground spring to the surface. It takes some digging. Although the intents of a man is hard to get at, a man of understanding will always be able to draw it out. Time will tell the intentions of someone’s heart. Don’t rush. Just watch and listen. Time will tell faithfulness. Time will tell deceit. Time will always tell.

The OT tabernacle corresponds to: body/outer court; soul/Holy place; spirit/Holy of Holies. The mind/concious and heart/subconcious parts of the soul book-end the thoughts, imagination, will...
In the Holy place where abides the golden candlestick (Ex. 25:31-40); we have generous access to illumination by the seven spirits of God including the spirit of counsel and the spirit of understanding (Is. 11:2).
Question is, will you draw it out (Prov. 20:5)?

The Spirit inspired word of God pierces even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Heb. 4:12).

COMPLETE: Prov. 26:__; As a dog returneth to his vomit,...
