The Fear of the Lord

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.

Proverbs 10:27 The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be shortened.

Proverbs 14:26 In the fear of the LORD one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge. 27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.

Proverbs 15:16 Better is a little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble with it.

Proverbs 19:23 The fear of the LORD leads to life, so that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil.

Proverbs 22:4 The reward of humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, honor and life.
Proverbs 28:14 How blessed is the man who fears always, but he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity.

There are a few contexts of the word fear. The Bible declares that God has not given us the spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7). It also goes on to say that fear has torment (1 John 4:18). These scriptures are really speaking to two different types of fear. The first is speaking of timidity. The second is speaking of what we typically speak of when talking of fear. These are not the types of fear that are discussed in the book of Proverbs.

We are supposed to love God. We are supposed to have a relationship with God; to draw near to God. We do not want to draw near to a God who we are deathly afraid of. The fear of God is to stand in awe of God; it is to have a reverence for God. It is in combination with desiring, loving, and thirsting for God.

People fear, reverence and have awe for many things in life and it is not a beginning of anything worthy of merit. The fear and reverence for God…. the humility to realize that this is a necessity…. the very awe from His Divine revelation is JUST THE BEGINNING! It is just the beginning of wisdom, knowledge and life that is hid with Christ. It is the point of departure from your past and opens the door for much more than our minds can contain.

The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil (8:13). Therefore, it is the beginning of repentance. Repentance is when you begin to love the things that God loves and hate the things that He hates.

The fear of God can bring peace with meager possessions that the rich with trouble cannot even dream of having (15:16). It is the beginning a protection upon our lives and the lives of our loved ones (14:26). In combination with humility, it is an opening toward blessing (22:4).

He's not just the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world;
He's the Lion of the tribe of Judah! (Rev. 13:8; Rev. 5:5)
He's not just a friend of sinners;
He is high and lifted up, and His train fills the temple! (Matt. 11:19; Is. 6:1-10)
He doesn't just clothe the lilies of the field;
He created Leviathan the Sea Monster! (Matt. 6:28-30; Job 41)
He doesn't just promulgate forgiveness seventy times seven; (Matt. 18:21-22; Rev. 1:18; 21:8)
He holds the keys to death, hell; even the lake that burns with fire and brimstone!

He's a powerful God. He's a Holy God. He's an Awesome God! He's a TERRIBLE God!

Fear and Tremble!
Weep and Howl!
Be afraid! Be verrrry AFRAID!
