Day 3: In Isaac Shall Thy Seed Be

Family Tree Matters

Genesis 21:12 But God said to Abraham, “Be not displeased because of the boy and because of your slave woman. Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for through Isaac shall your offspring be named.
Lineage is so important in biblical times that it also played a role in the prophecy concerning Jesus. Yesterday, I pointed out in scripture that Jesus would be from the seed of Abraham. However, Abraham was a father of a multitude. In no way does that one prophecy narrow down to any specific person. Therefore, the bible puts more constraints upon the revelation of the Messiah.

If you were to read the first chapter of the gospels of Matthew and Luke, you will see the details of Jesus' lineage. Your lineage was a part of your identity in biblical times. The record in the Gospels is precise, from Adam to Christ.

Not only did the Messiah have to be a descendant of Abraham, but He also had to be a descendant of Isaac. You see, Abraham had two sons: one of his will and one of God's promise. Ishmael had just as many sons as Isaac. If the only prophecy was that Christ would be the seed of Abraham, then there could've been an Arab Messiah. However, this did not happen. We will see over time, the bible becomes even more and more precise about the details of His birth and lineage. By being precise, prophecy excludes certain possibilities.

Tomorrow we will continue to look at another very important aspect of His ancestry.
