Day 10: Unto us a Child is Born
by From the Pastor's Desk on March 11th, 2013

Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.
This scripture plainly predicts the birth of the Messiah. He is King of kings and Lord of lords. The world is held together by the power of His word (Hebrews 1:3). For this reason, the government will be upon His shoulders. As the Creator of all things, He is the foundation of all existence. Not only that, but ”…by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. (Colossians 1:16)” Everything belongs to God.

Of course, we have established a few days ago that he would be God. This is what the Son of God means. He took on the Divine nature of His father. But the bible calls Him the Everlasting Father. This is putting more specific detail in place regarding the Mighty God in Christ. The Father is glorified in the Son. Read the scripture:

“Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.  (John 14:8)”

Clearly, Jesus fulfills this part of the prophecy as well. He is God manifested in flesh (1 Timothy 3:16). All the fullness of God dwells in Him bodily (Colossians 2:9).

He is the Prince of Peace. The title Prince denotes His Divine authority. Ultimately, peace is something that the Lord Jesus will fulfill at the conclusion of all things, but He is able to establish peace in our hearts in this life. While we are going through hardship and pressure, Jesus can bring peace. He is our peace.

Finally, the scripture backs up what Nathan said to David. The Messiah’s Kingdom will be forever. This is fulfilled in the establishment of the Kingdom of God manifested through Jesus Christ’s earthly ministry. He commanded Israel to repent and believe because the kingdom of God was near (Mark 1:14-15).

This passage of scripture is one of the most quoted in churches today. For that reason, it is one of my favorite Messianic prophecies.
