Day 13: The Light in Galilee
by From the Pastor's Desk on March 13th, 2013

Isaiah 9:1But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. 2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.

Matthew 4:12 Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 15“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— 16 the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.”
Not only does the bible confirm ahead of time where He would be born, but it also confirms where He would begin His earthly ministry. From His preteen years, He was raised in Nazareth of Galilee. He then moved His ministry to Capernaum of Galilee. This seemed to be sort of a base of operations for His earthly ministry.

One would expect that His ministry would be centered around Judea and Jerusalem near the temple. But there was something in the plan of God that was a foreshadowing of what God wanted to do. He wanted the light to shine unto the Gentiles. He was born in Judea (Judah) near Jerusalem in the heart of Israel, but based His operations out of an area of the Gentiles. In Isaiah, it is referred to Galilee of the nations, but in Matthew we read Galilee of the Gentiles. In the Old Testament, nations (or, goyim) literally means Gentile nations, or from the standpoint of Israel “every other nation.”

Again this shows the great accuracy of the word of God that confirmed the coming of the Messiah. We’ve seen details predicted about His birth, His birthplace, His lineage and now where He would start His ministry. God never misses the details.
